DRUMMERS/DANCERS
I have been more than fortunate to be MAKING MUSIC and drumming every day since 1972
first on drumset,
then marimba,
and then North Indian tabla.
But my experience plaiying elbow to elbow with the MEXICA drummers below
has been a humbling and eye opening experience into my ancestral past, and how
I do what I do.
Over the years I have had the pleasure of making music with the following
MEXICA drummers/dancers
either at rehearsals, "ceremonial danza" and/or "performance danza"

Erick Barraza Gabriel Castaneda Belen Gallardo Martin Gallardo
Raymond Ramirez Nazario Segura Christopher Ixtemoc Stenmo
all danzante drummers currently residing
in Los Angeles, CA., USA
who have allowed me to drum elbow to elbow with them
All are dancers/drummers or drummer/dancers who either continue to do both
or gravitate more toward dancing or drumming, depending
on their personal choice
I have been invited to accompany, observe,
and learn various rhythms from these folks.
Practical information as well as documented(written) information.
There is ALWAYS something to learn either from practical performance experience
or thru research and study, and I have found that they are equally important
in regards to being able to gather, learn and question new information
as did our ancestors
black and red ink,
runs through our culture, history and our veins -
to favor one at the exclusion of another is to be close minded
it is the same reason I have studied with 4 outstanding North Indian Tabla
teachers
i.e.,
for a deeper understanding of the traditions each one knows,
trying to understand the different perspectives based on practical EXPERIENCE
of the elders/gurus/teachers)
Each rhythm, each groove has its own feel and lilt, as does each drummer
Written and/or notated music is but a "shadow of sound"
it does not represent what the actual music sounds and feels like.
because MUSIC is,
after all ,
the most abstract art form,
as it only exists when it is performed
"touching music written on the page" does not exist until it is played
Acknowledgment must also be given to
Ramiro Ramirez Duarte of TRIBU
https://www.facebook.com/ramiro.rduarte.5?fref=ts
https://www.facebook.com/grupo.tribu/...
who continues to be an inspiration for what is now being currently played
on the teponaztli, stones and various indigenous percussion of Mexico
Ramiro was also kind enough to allow me the use of some of his instruments
when I had performances at the Castle of Chapultepec in Mexico City in 2016.
I also have the pleasure of working with
